Family Therapy

Family systems theory is a theory of human behavior that views the family as an emotional unit and uses systems thinking to describe the complex interactions in the unit.  Members of the family are intensely connected emotionally.  What affects one, affects all in the family system.  For example: when family members get anxious, the anxiety can escalate by spreading from one family member to the other.  As the anxiety increases, the stress increases and it can be overwhelming.  Anxiety in the family is contagious.

All families experience some type of disagreement, argument or anxiety.  Some families function in unhealthy patterns and therefore conflict exists.  Families are affected when one member of the family is chronically ill, suffers from substance abuse, divorce and separation, single parenting, academic issues with children and/or adolescents, caring for elderly parents, financial issues, loss of employment, death or loss, as well as a lack of communicating effectively.

Family therapy may be the only setting where you will have the opportunity to hear how other family members are experiencing the current difficulty without judgments or criticisms.  We allow each family member to speak and voice their feelings. We help you learn how to effectively communicate with one another. You will learn the reason you become so reactive to others and obtain the tools and skills to respond in a non-reactive manner.  Oftentimes we do not realize that how we respond in our personal life is also how we respond and react in a professional setting.  Learn to identify your triggers and you will see an improvement in your personal and professional life.  We are one of the few psychotherapists in the area who will schedule a session and meet with you and all family members.
