A Lesson From KPop Demon Hunters

Sometimes a song resonates not just because of its melody, but because it captures something deeply human — the struggle to find our voice and step into who we were meant to be.

Recently, the song Golden from the animated film KPop Demon Hunters has captured global attention. The song has been nominated for Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards, a remarkable achievement that speaks to its powerful message and global resonance.

Beyond its awards and chart success, what makes “Golden” stand out is its message. The lyrics speak about living in the shadows of expectations, feeling misunderstood, and struggling to reconcile who the world expects us to be with who we truly are.

Lines like “I lived two lives, tried to play both sides but I couldn't find my own place” capture a psychological experience many people quietly carry. From a young age, we often learn to adapt to what others want from us — the “good child,” the responsible partner, the person who doesn’t make waves. In the process, parts of our authentic selves can become hidden.

Over time, that disconnect can lead to feelings of loneliness, confusion, and self-doubt.

Yet the turning point in the song is powerful: “I’m done hidin’, now I’m shinin’ like I’m born to be.”

This moment reflects something we often see in personal growth and therapy — the shift from living according to expectations to living authentically. It is when someone begins to let go of old patterns, outdated labels, and the belief that they must shrink themselves in order to be accepted.

Instead, they begin to stand in their truth.

The success of “Golden” reminds us that the journey toward authenticity is universal. Whether through music, personal growth, or life experience, many of us spend years trying to break through invisible walls — expectations, fear of judgment, or the belief that we must hide parts of ourselves.

But when those walls finally come down, something remarkable happens.

We stop trying to fit into someone else’s definition of who we should be.

And we begin to become who we were always meant to be.

Against all odds.
