Is It Really Cheating If It’s Only Online?

By Maria Sikoutris Di Iorio, MA, EdS, MFT, LPC
You’ve never met in person. You’ve never kissed. You’ve never touched. But you check your phone hoping they’ve written, you think about them throughout the day, and you may be telling them things you no longer tell your partner.
So, is it cheating?
There isn’t one answer. Every couple has different boundaries, and what feels innocent to one couple may feel like a betrayal to another. But an online relationship can become emotionally intimate long before it ever becomes physical.
Emotional infidelity can be just as painful as physical.
The questions to ask yourself are important: Are you hiding the relationship? Would you be uncomfortable if your partner read the messages? Are you deleting conversations or minimizing how often you communicate? Are you sharing personal or intimate details with this person that you once shared with your partner?
If the answer is yes, it may be time to look more closely at what is happening.
Emotional infidelity can be just as painful as physical infidelity. Sometimes the betrayal isn't the physical act; it's the secrecy, the emotional energy, and the intimacy being invested somewhere else.
And often, the online relationship is meeting a need. Perhaps you feel listened to, admired, understood, or desired. Perhaps there is excitement that has been missing from your relationship. That doesn't necessarily mean your relationship is over—but it does mean something deserves attention.
Couples often talk about physical boundaries but never discuss their online ones. Is private messaging with an ex okay? What about flirting? Sending photos? Talking late at night? Sharing intimate thoughts? These conversations may feel uncomfortable, but having them before a boundary is crossed can protect a marriage.
If you find yourself asking, “Is this cheating?” it may be worth asking an even more important question: “Why do I need this relationship, and what am I getting from it that I’m not getting in my own?”
